When I was studying abroad at
Universitat de Barcelona, university sent me to do six weeks of work
experience. I was part of a research team for a project that aims to
characterize the social groups that defend the independence of Catalonia.
I hadn’t to staying in another city, I
was just in Barcelona. I had to go to the meetings of groups involved in
protests, and later interview them. About formal stuff, it was a relaxed
project: I didn’t have to wear a specific outfit, nor did I have to meet
schedules, only work with deadlines.
The work I had to do was mostly about information
recompilation and data analysis. It was a work I had done in my country, that’s
why it wasn’t a trouble for me. The interesting work was trying to be part of a
social movement in a new city.
It was a positive experience because I could
learn about and with people fighting for a political right. Beyond doing
interviews and analysis, the most enriching thing was the field work and being
able to be with social actors. I recommend these types of works because you must
go out your comfort zone and know other cultures and social movements.
